Monte Barro: nature and history
An excursion out of radar during your holiday on Lake Como
The splendid and suggestive panoramic balcony above Green Lands and Lakes.
Monte Barro, a beautiful and charming terrace overlooking the Brianza area and its lakes, is located in front of the city of Lecco, southwest of Grigne. It is surrounded by Lake Como, Lake Annone, Lake Garlate and is placed above Galbiate; like an isle into the Green Land, it seems a protector of the town of Lecco, as to cover the marvellous panorama to the North. The area is under the protection of a Regional Park, thanks to its richness in flora and fauna.
Easily reachable by car or by public transport from all its sides, Monte Barro offers unlimited possibilities for hiking lovers. You can choose a path according to your level of training, from very easy trails up to the challenging ones or to climbing spots, depending on the altitude, length and travel time, but you can also decide for an itinerary to get to know the natural, historical and geological peculiarities of the park.
Eremo of Monte Barro, a property of the Park, is a privileged place to discover the history, the archaeology and the landscape of the territory at the gates of Lecco and Lake Como.
Eremo is at the most extended archaeological area of the gothic era found in Italy, dated back to V°-VI° cent. .a.D.. Its history smells of Rome, gothic invasions, medieval and Renaissance times until becoming a sanatorium in XX cent.
Its central position is perfect for holiday, excursions, learning sessions, courses, meetings and congresses. At Eremo there is the Archaeological Museum of Barro with several laboratories. There is also Parco Monte Barro Hostel, with 48 beds.
Monte Barro is a place of culture, nature and sport: there you can explore the surroundings to discover the hidden treasures by this wild mount.
It conserves some places of extraordinary peculiarities, where you can admire beauties and views. It is crossed by trekking trails, that bring you to the peak or to the medieval remains spread on the slopes of Monte Barro. There is also the Falesia di Camporeso, a wall for climbing with hundreds of equipped routes.
