The Magnolia of Azzano
A huge bell of leaves and flowers is the undisputed star of a village suspended between lake and mountain.
The village of Mezzegra, since 2014 part of the municipality of Tremezzina, is made up of several hamlets, where characteristic stone alleys connect the water of the lake with the green of the ancient olive groves and woods of the Larian Mountains.
One of the focal points is undoubtedly the beautifl little square by the lake in the locality of Azzano: here, an incredible magnolia with a harmonious shape transforms this corner of the village into a truly unique sight.
With a height of 18 m and a trunk circumference of 4.20 m (diameter of 135 cm), the tree is truly remarkable in size for the species. What is even more astonishing is its wonderful bearing and scenic location: for over 200 years it has adorned the square (named after the Magnolia) between the lake shore and 18th-century buildings.
Looking at it, so elegant with the benches in a circle under its foliage, one immediately notices the beautiful mountain slope in the background and the scenic beauty of Tremezzina. Between the Isola Comacina, the Ossuccio Sanctuary (UNESCO heritage site), the Loveno peninsula, mountains, centuries-old olive groves and neoclassical villas, the area is popular with tourists from all over the world. And a great way to cross it, among breathtaking views and historical-artistic wonders, is to walk along the Lake Como Greenway.
A green monument that is accessible to the public.
