Villa serbelloni
In the village of Bellagio, "the pearl of Lake Como", is home to one of the most evocative historical residences of the Lario
Villa Serbelloni is located in Bellagio, on the romantic Lake Como, in the middle of a huge park.
The villa was named after the Count Alessandro Serbelloni, who bought it from the Sfondrati family after falling in love with the grounds, to which he devoted the most energy and resources.
No changes were made to the building's exterior and while the interior was carefully decorated, the majority of the work was carried out on the grounds with the creation of trails, carriage roads and avenues. Following the death of the Bellagio heirs, the villa fell into disuse, until the second half of the 19th century when it was converted into a hotel.
Many famous guests have stayed at Villa Serbelloni, both before it was bought by the Serbelloni family (who hosted the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Cardinal Borromeo and Lodovico il Moro among others) and especially in the 19th century, when it hosted illustrious visitors such as Silvio Pellico, Alessandro Manzoni, Ippolito Pindemonte, the Emperor Francis I, the Kaiser Wilhelm and Umberto I.
Only the gardens are open to the public exclusively by guided tour: the visitors can admire a large quantity of plants, including rare and exotic plants, which grow on the terraces sloping down towards the lake.
