The Michoacan Pine at Villa Melzi
A few steps from the Moorish kiosk of Villa Melzi, the very special Michoacan pine fascinates with its branches caressing the lake.
The Villa Melzi Gardens are known and appreciated for their incredible botanical heritage.
After passing through their gate, at the end of Bellagio's Manzoni lakefront, one enters a world of marvellous tree, shrub and flower species from all parts of the planet.
In a park where the skilful fusion of natural, architectural and artistic elements creates scenic and harmonious landscape views, one of the focal points is the Moorish kiosk surrounded by elegant evergreen trees. Of these, the one that catches the eye is undoubtedly the great Michoacan pine with its foliage descending to the water of the Lario lake.
The tree, a botanical rarity that came to us from Mexico, has been astonishing with its incredible bearing and long needles for two centuries. Even its size is astonishing: the trunk has a circumference of 4.80 m (diameter 155 cm) and the truly vast foliage almost seems to join the kiosk to the beautiful umbrella-shaped avenue of plane trees leading to the villa.
The pine tree, more than 20 m high, is, however, only one of the monumental and special trees present. Also not to be missed are the redwoods, Ginkgo biloba, bald cypresses, camphor trees, incense cedars, palms, liriodendrons, cedars and the beautiful Japanese maples in their autumn colour explosion.
