The Plane Trees of Villa Carlotta
Two incredible plane trees welcome visitors to Tremezzina and Villa Carlotta, from wherever they come, whether land or water.
Wonderment. This is the first word that comes to mind when crossing Tremezzina. This strip of land between the lake and the mountains is a concentration of entrancing views.
The area is popular with foreign tourists among ancient villages with mysterious alleys, fabulous landscape views, historic villas and beautiful gardens. And the most popular and most visited spot is the famous Villa Carlotta with its botanical gardens.
Heralding the treasures that can be visited beyond the gate of the late 17th-century mansion are two monumental plane trees: positioned between the lake and the Sommariva Oratory (adjacent to the villa), they have for decades been the ideal meeting point for groups of tourists disembarking from buses or boats at that very spot.
Under the large white trunks (circumferences of 5.50 and 4.30 metres), many stand in amazement. The strong roots of the two neighbouring tree giants are now visibly fused together, as if clinging tenaciously to that wonderful corner so close to the lake.
Their monumentality is given by their incredible landscape value even more than by their considerable size and bearing.
The two plane trees are thus perfect spokesmen for the immense artistic, floral and arboreal heritage of Villa Carlotta.
A green monument that is accessible to the public.
