Chapel Ten - The Crucifixion
The Chapel of the Crucifixion, a masterpiece of art and faith on the Sacro Monte di Varese.
The Tenth Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese, dedicated to the Crucifixion of Christ, completed in 1623, stands at the top of a long climb, which ends just before turning suddenly to the right.
Visitors are immediately struck by the large portico occupying the entire width of the chapel. Three arches, of which the central one is the largest, support a façade inscribed with one of Lamentations of Jeremiah.
Inside the chapel, the Crucifixion scene is portrayed using over fifty statues, masterpieces of Lombard baroque sculpture, and a painted crowd. Sculpture and painting capture the attention, while details of the crucifixion, with men who raise the cross, thieves bound to their crosses, soldiers on horseback, and the Virgin Mary in the moment before fainting.
The Tenth Chapel is a notable example of fusion between architecture, sculpture and painting. During the Easter period, a beam of light enters from two openings and illuminates the figure of the crucified Christ, creating a dramatic effect that involves the visitor. The chapel transmits the drama of the Crucifixion with extraordinary success, and brings this holy event even closer to those who observe it with faith.
