Chapel Eleven - The Resurrection
The Eleventh Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese: the resurrection of Christ in statues and frescos.
The Eleventh Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese, dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ and finished before 1622, has a slender structure with a façade that is parallel to the road, and a portico with arches, of which the one in the centre is the widest.
The chapel entrance is at the top of a stairway leading to a window with three lights.
Inside, terracotta statues (1622) by Francesco Silva represent the Resurrection of Christ and highlight His victory over death. The scene is surrounded by soldiers, surprised and some even dazzled, by the divine light, while others try to recover their weapons, but in vain. At the bottom, the souls freed from limbo begin their ascent, merging into the representations of the resurrected Jesus appearing before Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, and the Disciples at Emmaus.
The frescos inside the chapel are the work of Isidoro Bianchi da Campione, and were painted between 1650 and 1654, and they contribute to creating an atmosphere of great spirituality and reflection for visitors.
