Chapel Nine - Jesus Climbs the Calvary
The Ninth Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese, dedicated to Jesus Climbing the Calvary, has a stairway into the house and a portico with three arches on columns, but the stand-out element is the now damaged fresco of the Ecce Homo, completed in 1686 by Milanese artist, Stefano Maria Legnani.
The chapel has a front view through three central openings. The architectural structure, with a lower rectangular section, topped by another rectangular structure with bevelled angles, was designed to enhance the dynamic representation inside. Jesus Climbing the Calvary, bent and falling under the weight of the cross, Veronica receiving the veil with the image of Christ, and other personages who animate the scene.
The irregular stone and mortar floor and the unified background add to the visual depth, even if these have been damaged by damp and by previous restoration work.
The walls, frescoed by Giovan Paolo Recchi in 1654, show Jerusalem, elegant figures, soldiers, and angels.
