Basilica of San Michele Maggiore
Further south of the city we find our third stop, inside one of Pavia's most important churches: the Basilica of San Michele Maggiore.
This place of worship was also originally built in the time of the Longobards, and was the subject of deep veneration. Today, it is considered a masterpiece of Longobard-Romanesque architecture.
The basilica that stands today is the result of transformations from the Carolingian and Longobard periods, leading up to its current Romanesque features.
The basilica became an important site for royal coronation ceremonies, including that of Frederick Barbarossa.
