The Freedom Plane Tree of Breno
The imposing green monument at the gates of the town of Breno has been a symbol of freedom for two centuries.
Starting with the French Revolution, the custom of symbolically planting 'freedom trees' in squares became widespread.
The Val Camonica inhabitants themselves, although far from Paris, were very active in the resistance and in pursuing revolutionary ideas. With Napoleon's arrival in northern Italy, an air of freedom was also breathed in Val Camonica: to celebrate the event, the beautiful plane tree that we can admire today in all its grandeur was planted in 1797.
Positioned at the entrance to Breno, a town with a beautiful historic centre that took on the role of the Val Camonica county seat, the mighty tree welcomes visitors with its incredible trunk with a circumference of more than 5 metres (diameter 160 cm).
With a height of over 30 metres, placid and reassuring, it towers in the shadow of the fortress dominated by the medieval castle. The arboreal giant also impresses with its lush foliage and excellent health, which is also guaranteed by instrumental examinations and expert pruning.
A green monument that is accessible to the public.
