Astronomy Evening
A 12th-century building with a magnetic beauty, located on a rock spur overlooking the Valle Camonica, bears witness to the ancient battles as well as providing an exceptional viewpoint for some stargazing.
All that remains of the old Castello di Cimbergo, which stands above the centre of the village of the same name, in the province of Brescia, are the romantic ruins of the walls, set into the landscape. They tell the story of the ancient battles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines in the Valle Camonica, of the building of Cimbergo’s bell tower using some of the stones in the 19th century, and the time that passed, before and after, leaving the green panorama of the Valle Camonica unchanged.
The castle is now part of the Riserva Naturale incisioni rupestri di Ceto, Cimbergo e Paspardo, the largest archaeological area in the Valle Camonica, which contains relics throughout the area, dating back to early Christian times. It is no coincidence that the rock carvings found there were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, making this stunning valley famous the world over. Some areas are not open to visitors but others, like the one surrounding Castello di Cimbergo, are very important historical landmarks.
As well as opportunities to walk the trails, explore the decorated rocks and discover the fantastic views, Valle Camonica also offers the possibility to take a look at the uncontaminated sky. With a specialist astronomer guide and a telescope you can enjoy star gazing from a place where bright stars, planets and nebulae can only add to your memorable shared experience.
