Vigevano
A Renaissance Gem in the Heart of Lomellina
At the turn of the 14th century, at the apex of the Renaissance lordships, the Vigevano fief - a fortified village of Lombard origin - was experiencing a golden age with the rise to power of Ludovico Sforza known as il Moro.
It was Ludovico who re-built the town centre and porticoed Piazza Ducale in what was one of the noblest Italian town planning undertakings of any period of Italian history, a veritable public salon antechamber to the grandiose castle complex which was accessed by means of a wide stairway or flight of steps in the area of the tower, along the building's south side where the entrance is now virtually concealed by porticoes.
ocated in the heart of Lomellina, Vigevano is one of the most fascinating cities in the province of Pavia, renowned for its artistic, historical, and cultural heritage. Strolling through its historic center means immersing yourself in a timeless atmosphere, where Renaissance elegance and deep-rooted artisanal traditions intertwine.
The city is dominated by the splendid Piazza Ducale, considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Built at the end of the 15th century at the behest of Ludovico il Moro, it is a perfect example of Renaissance architectural harmony, with its symmetrical arcades and decorations that frame the majestic Cathedral of Saint Ambrose.
Above the square rises the imposing Sforza Castle, a grand complex that tells the story of the city and the noble families who ruled it. Inside, visitors can explore the Covered Road, a unique elevated passageway from the Sforza era. The castle also houses the Civic Museums, including the International Footwear Museum, which celebrates Vigevano’s historic shoemaking tradition, renowned for producing high-fashion footwear appreciated worldwide.
Vigevano is not only about history and art but also offers nature and relaxation. Just a short distance from the city center lies the Ticino Park, a natural oasis perfect for walks, cycling excursions, and tranquil moments surrounded by greenery.
For food lovers, the city offers a unique gastronomic experience: from typical Lomellina specialties like risotto with sausage to renowned local products such as goose salami and rice cultivated in the surrounding countryside.
Visiting Vigevano means allowing yourself to be captivated by the charm of a city that has preserved its glorious past while remaining vibrant and welcoming to every traveler. A journey through art, history, and flavors in the heart of Lombardy.
