The Horse Chestnut of the Visconti Castle
Green monuments often go well with architectural and artistic monuments: this is the case with the trees that adorn the grounds of the Castello Visconti di San Vito in Somma Lombardo.
Of medieval origin, the fortified structure was transformed by the Visconti family into a stately home in the mid-15th century. Around its mighty walls and towers, many valuable trees have had the opportunity to grow luxuriantly, such as cedars, thujas, incense cedars and lime trees.
Striking for its location and its perfect integration into the architectural context is the remarkable horse chestnut tree on the entrance forecourt to the castle. Together with a large lime tree, it adorns the monumental medieval façade of the building, creating a postcard view.
The tree, with a trunk circumference of about 3 metres (diameter 95 cm), then invites you to discover the other monumental trees hidden in the castle park (which are accessible to the public on opening days).
