Castello di Monteruzzo
For our third stop, we will visit the castle of Monteruzzo, situated on the top of the hill above the village of Castiglione Olona.
It is a building that dates back to the 16th century and was originally an agricultural residence: it owes its current appearance to extensions that were added during the 1700s and the 1800s, when the two turrets were built and the north wing was extended.
A quick glance is sufficient to identify the typical features of a medieval castle, with the terracotta battlements and the machicolation in full view - although they have been deprived of their former function.
Following a slow and careful restoration, the castle was brought back to life again in 2005, becoming the seat of the Civic Library of Castiglione Olona and reinventing itself as a cultural centre for events, shows and art exhibitions. Don't forget to climb up to the terrace, where you can enjoy a stunning view of the ancient hamlet against the backdrop of the Pre-Alps of Varesotto.
