The Magnolia of Cinisello Balsamo
Unique shapes and voluminous foliage make the magnolia in Cinisello Balsamo an undisputed protagonist of the city centre.
For a tree to be defined as monumental, it does not necessarily have to have a considerable diameter or height; other valid criteria for attributing monumentality may be, for example, bearing, landscape value, historical and cultural value.
The splendid magnolia in the courtyard of honour of Villa Ghirlanda-Silva in Cinisello Balsamo is a tree of great importance for precisely these three criteria. In fact, it has a wide crown supported by several trunks that take on peculiar sinuous shapes, it is scenically positioned on a central street in front of the 17th century palace and has an important connection to the historical buildings and the community.
The magnolia is loved by citizens and is much photographed in its elegant combination with the surrounding architecture, especially during its flowering. For those walking along the street, it then serves as an invitation to enter the beautiful historical park behind the palace. It is a green area full of lush trees and able to provide moments of relaxation away from the hectic pace of the Milanese hinterland. From the gardens, one can further appreciate Villa Ghirlanda, now home to the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Civica Scuola di Musica.
A green monument that is accessible to the public during park opening hours.
