Lanzo - Sighignola
Suitable for both cyclists and those on foot, our final hike starts in the town of Lanzo which, following a slightly winding road built at the end of the First World War as part of the “Northern Frontier” (the Italian defensive system facing Switzerland, known as the Cadorna Line) will lead you to the so-called “Balcone d’Italia”.
A mountain in the Lugano Prealps on the border between Italy and Switzerland, with a gently-sloping and wooded eastern face on the Italian side and a rather steep western one on the Swiss side, la Sighignola is 1320m in height: the main attraction at the summit is the Belvedere della Sighignola, the panoramic terrace, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view ranging from Lake Lugano to the Grison Alps, from Monte Viso to the Apennines, including a number of peaks such as Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn.
At the summit you can also visit a small chapel dedicated to the memory of Italian mountain infantry (or “Alpini”) who were killed during the First World War.
