Cornabusa Sanctuary
It is located in the municipality of Sant'Omobono Terme, on the eastern side of the Imagna Valley. Perched in an impervious area near the Pertüs pass along the Albenza mountain one can find the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cornabusa, a building dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The holy place was carved out of a natural cavity or “rock hole” corna busa in the local dialect. During the devastation caused by the constant battles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines that took place for almost a century between the 14th and 15th centuries, it had become a refuge for the inhabitants of the surrounding communities, who brought a statue of the Madonna into the grotto. The statue was later lost and found again in the 16th century. It is said that the person who found it was a deaf shepherdess who miraculously regained her hearing. Since then, the cave has been a pilgrimage destination and has become a stone shrine, surrounded by greenery and a point of reference for all the inhabitants of the valley.
