Angera
Our tour starts in Angera, a medieval village surrounded by woodland considered by some to be an open-air museum due to the variety of historical and cultural location that it contains.
The crown jewel of the Province of Varese, Angera boasts over forty landmarks, including historical monuments, beautiful landscapes and artworks of considerable value.
Of all the town’s sights, Rocca di Angera, a medieval fortification owned by the Borromeo family that sits proud and imposing on a rocky outcrop, stands out. Dating back to Roman and Lombard times but today a combination of five different buildings built between the 11th and 17th centuries, Rocca di Angera will give you a fascinating journey into the past through its well-kept frescoed rooms filled with ancient relics, as well as a splendid view of the waters of the lake all the way up to Arona that can be enjoyed from the top of its towers.
What to see and do in Angera:
• The town can be explored on foot or by bicycle at any time of day
• The Museo Diffuso, built in 2016, has open-air rooms which house as many as 50 historical, artistic and scenic monuments scattered between the village, its suburbs and its surrounding villages.
• You can also visit the Bruschera Oasis, a 400-hectare protected area populated with alders, white willows, reed beds and rare species, where you can watch a colony of cormorants on the Isolino Partegora.
• Thanks to the dream-like atmosphere that reigns here, the magnificent Angera lakefront, with its poetic views, is perfect for enjoying a picnic surrounded by nature or for a nice walk among green spaces and pretty little marinas.
