Lake Gleno
Nestled between the majestic peaks of the Bergamo Alps, Lake Gleno stands like an Alpine jewel set in tranquillity and serenity. Located in the picturesque Gleno valley in the province of Bergamo, this alpine lake offers an authentic experience for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the unspoilt beauty of nature.
Lake Gleno is an artificial lake whose history is marked by a tragic event in 1923, when the banks of the dam built to generate electricity collapsed and the resulting flood was devastating. The hamlet of Gleno and the nearby Villa dam were submerged by water and mud, causing extensive damage and the death of as many as 356 people. After the accident, the Gleno reservoir was never rebuilt, and the surrounding area was abandoned. Nature has gradually reclaimed the area, and now Laghetto del Gleno is a tourist destination for hikers and those wishing to explore the area and learn about its history.
Lake Gleno is an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding nature. Well-marked trails wind through the woods and mountains, leading visitors to breathtaking views and vantage points. Hiking enthusiasts will find pleasant routes to follow, from the more leisurely and accessible ones to the more challenging one for the more experienced.
Lake Valcanale is also a birdwatcher and nature photographer’s paradise. The biodiversity of the area attracts a variety of bird species, offering the opportunity to get close to wildlife and capture unique shots of these charming creatures.
With the cold season, Lake Gleno turns into a wonderful landscape blanketed by snow. The peace and quiet at that time of year add a magical atmosphere to the lake, inviting romantic walks in the snow and offering opportunities for winter sports such as cross-country skiing.
