Teatro alle Vigne
The Teatro alle Vigne became the Municipal Theatre in 1985
Teatro alle Vigne stands on the site of the chapel of St. Giovanni e Ognissanti alle Vigne, which used to belong to the religious order of the Umiliati, built together with the convent in Lodi at the end of the 13th century.
From 1631 to 1809, the building was the seat of the public high school run by the Barnabite Fathers. The church, designed by Giovanni Ambrogio Mazenta and consecrated in 1627, ceased to be a place of cult worship during the Napoleonic period and was used as a grain storehouse; as a municipal gymnasium from 1874. The Municipality began the renovation of the complex in 1976, which was reborn as the Municipal Theatre in 1985, thus re-using a building in the historic centre that would have otherwise been in ruins. The theatre opened in April of that year with a concert by the Cameristi della Scala conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni, to the notes of Mozart's Quartet K80 (which he wrote in Lodi).
The Theatre Seasons have featured actors including Vittorio Gassman, Giorgio Albertazzi, Marco Paolini, Franca Valeri, Lella Costa, Valerio Mastandrea, Filippo Timi, Silvio Orlando, Ottavia Piccolo, Tullio Solenghi, Lina Sastri, Ambra Angiolini, Claudio Santamaria, Corrado Tedeschi, Monica Guerritore, Emilio Solfrizzi, and Alessandro Haber, to name but a few.
The last decade has been marked by alternating productions, including The Two of Us by Michael Frayn for the 2011/2012 season, with Lunetta Savino and Emilio Solfrizzi, The King's Speech with Luca Barbareschi in 2012/13, The Price with Umberto Orsini and Massimo Popolizio in the 2015/16 season, The Father starring Alessandro Haber and Lucrezia Lante della Rovere in the 2017/2018 season and The Miser by Molière with Alessandro Benvenuti, Il Misantropo with Giulio Scarpati and Valeria Solarino in 2018/2019 and in 2019/2020: Van Gogh. L'odore assordante del bianco, a play by Stefano Massini with Alessandro Preziosi.
Cabaret shows were also staged between 2000 and 2010; among the performers were Antonio Albanese, Angela Finocchiaro, and Teresa Mannino.
For three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, puppet shows were presented to entertain children, with performances dedicated to fairy tales from literature.
The musical offer, since the very first performance, has remained constant year after year, in collaboration with the Associazione Amici della Musica 'A. Schmid', with the participation of performers such as Raffaele Pe, Leo Nucci, Quartetto di Cremona, Gloria Campaner, Francesca Dego, Fratelli Kujken, Filippo Gamba, Natalia Gutman, Quartetto d'archi Guadagnini, Aldo Ciccolini, Gustav Leonhardt, Elisso Wirssaladze, Roberto Vecchioni, Massimo Ranieri and Enzo Jannacci being just some of the singers who have performed on the stage of the Vigne.
Over the past decade, the theatre has welcomed the “Lodi Blues Festival”, which has featured, among others, London guitarist Matt Schofield and the band The Animals.
Regarding the younger generations, each Season features two autonomous sections in the theatre programme: the Famiglie a Teatro cycle, which presents eight Sunday shows dedicated to the youngest audience along with their parents; Teatro per le Scuole, which presents students from numerous schools in the city and province with around 20 shows, focusing on historical, cultural, and social themes.
During the closure of the Theatres in the 2020-21 Season, due to an anti-pandemic governmental provision, the Theatre produced a cycle of 15 shows in streaming, featuring the talents and artistic institutions of the Lodi area. The first of these was broadcast live on 22 November 2020, in collaboration with the Lombardy Region, starring the baritone Leo Nucci, an adopted Lodi resident.
Since 1987 the Teatro alle Vigne has been the venue for the 'Fanfullino della riconoscenza' ceremony, a prize awarded to Lodi personalities who have excelled for outstanding professional or artistic achievements.
