Santa Maria Assunta Church

Santa Maria Assunta Church is considered the most ancient pieve in Cremona’s diocese, founded by the Goths in the 5th Century. At the beginning of the 17th Century it became the bishopric, because of the forced exile of Cremona’s bishop. In the 9th Century it was named Collegiate Church, its archpriest was nominated by the Pope. It was destroyed and re-built several times during its history and it was seriously damaged in 1802 because of an earthquake. At the end of the 19th Century, the architect Carlo Maciachini built the big octagonal dome and gave to the church its current layout. Among the church’s paintings, the most important one is by  the Flemish painter Matthias Stom (Rubens disciple). It represents a not ecclesiastical subject: the liberation from the chains of Flavio Giuseppe by the Roman emperor Vespasian. There is also a second peculiar element: a Middle Ages Trinity which had always be considered an Aryan Trinity.
