Ski Mountaineering in Valmalenco

The classic routes

Below are described some classic ski mountaineering routes in Valmalenco. This is merely a brief presentation, therefore we recommend you to check the actual conditions of each itinerary and to comply with the safety rules.
Always check the snow-weather report and ask the mountaineering guides of Valmalenco for further information and suggestions.

1) CASSANDRA PASS 3097 m
Departure point: Chiareggio 1593 m
Uphill: 1504 m
Time: 4:30 

This is one of the most popular routes of the vally. Even though this route is not particularly difficult, it must not be underestimated, since part of it crosses a glacier. The ascent to Pizzo Cassandra requires good mountaineering skills.  BSA

2) MELLO PASS 2992 m
Departure point: Chiareggio 1593 m
Uphill: 1400 m
Time: 4:30 

Val Sissone is less crowded than Val Ventina and reaches the heart of the Disgrazia group. The ascent to the pass requires  good mountaineering skills. BSA

3) VAZZEDA PASS 2978 m
Departure: Chiareggio 1593 m
Uphill: 1385 m
Time: 3:30

Illuminated by sunlight since morning, the slope leading to Chiareggio offers mountaineers an exciting descent. BSA

4) MOUNT MOTTA 2336 m
Departure point: San Giuseppe - chairlift parking 1500 m
Uphill: 900 m
Time: 2:30

The Italian Alpine Club - Valmalenco, together with the Mountain Community of Sondrio has designed this wonderful route, in order to safely reach the top of the Alpe Palù ski slopes

5) SASSO NERO 2917 m
Departure point: arrival of the Sasso Nero chairlift 2350 m
Uphill: 570 m (1400 m from San Giuseppe)
Time: 1:30 (4:00 from San Giuseppe).

The difference in altitude can be reduced by taking the ski facilities. The peak, at very the center of Valmalenco, is an exceptional lookout. BS

6) BOCCHETTA DELLE FORBICI 2636 m
Departure point: Campo Moro 1933 m
Uphill: 700 m
Time: 2:30 

This route offers a great sight of the Bernina mount. After reaching the Bocchetta delle Forbici, it is possible to turn left and reach the peak of the Forbici mount. BSA

7) PIZZO SCALINO 3323 m
Departure point: Campo Moro 1940 m
Uphill: 1383 m
Time: 4:30

This is a very popular route. Pay attention during the ascent, which offers an exceptional sight. BSA
