Parco delle Marmitte dei Giganti
This expression comes from the cylindrical or bowl-like shape and the large size of these geomorphological marvels
The “Marmitte dei Giganti” include an area north of the town of Chiavenna, affected by geomorphological manifestations of a glacial origin.
The streams collecting the surface meltwater from the glaciers flowed above it and when they met with a crevice they flowed down it, carrying stones and debris.
The energy accumulated in the drop caused the waters and stones to churn thereby eroding the rock under the ice, digging deep holes in strange shapes and rounding the stones making them spherical in shape.
THE ROCK DRAWINGS
On the smooth rocks, and vertical walls of the ancient caves, on isolated boulders and in grottos is a testament to the many centuries of human presence and their uninterrupted need to communicate through rock drawings.
