Valchiavenna SightEating tour
A tour in the heart of Valchiavenna, among valleys visited by Leonardo Da Vinci and mentioned in its Codes and drafts, to enjoy local wine and food in the traditional atmosphere of a “Crotto” with a glimpse toward the future.
You will reach Chiavenna from Milan railway station by train in about 2 hours and on arrival a private car will take you to Acquafraggia waterfalls where you will visit some vineyards. Leonardo Da Vinci was intensely moved by the magnificence of Acquafraggia waterfalls and mentioned them in the Codice Atlantico where he described their beauty.
“Su per detto fiume” (Mera river) “si truova chadute di acqua di 400 braccia le quale fanno belvedere…”.
Back in town, you will taste a typical lunch in a Crotto where you will also experience the “sorel”. Crotto is a natural cave formed by ancient rocks from landslides where temperature is kept constant at 4 to 8 degrees by the "sorel", an air flowing between rocks and creating a perfect environment to age wine (as there is no temperature variation) as well as cured meats or cold cuts and cheese from alpine pastures and dairies. The local Crotto were mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in its Codes and drafts as good quality and cheap “Osteria”. Today, some Crotto have been restored to be fine restaurants serving local food while most of them are still private and thus close to the public. You will taste and experience a typical lunch in a Crotto.
Finally, the car will take you to an innovative wine farm on top of the mountain where you will enjoy a stunning view on the valley. Here, you will taste their typical focaccia and wines and, if you are cuisine lovers, you will experience a short cooking class.
Extraordinary wines have been produced for centuries in this area. Leonardo da Vinci will exalt the "Powerful wines and more" of the valley. In this mountainous area, vineyards have been obtained thanks to the effort and the constant engagement of generations of farmers by terracing the land, which represents one of the most important features of the strict link between territory and viticulture.
