In the swirling current of the inexorable flow of the great river of Music History much changed as it passed from one century to the next, and inevitably, in the face of many new forms coming into musical prominence, just as many old ones died or fell into disuse.
Come to think of it, however, there is one musical form that has withstood the wear and tear of time, even a decade or so after its birth, a type of composition that has formally remained almost the same and has survived fashions, restorations, experimentalism and reforms of all kinds: the Song.
