St Peter's church in Berbenno is a monument of great historical and artistic interest. Its year of construction is not known, but is set between the 7th and the 10th century. Just like the first Christian baptismal churches that were built  in open and accessible places, St. Peter's church was build on the valley floor, close to a crossroads, so that it could be reached by the worshippers that inhabited both sides of the valley. 

On the outside, the church appears stocky, because of the ground uplifts due to alluvial deposits: originally, the building was 2 metres higher. Despite that, the church has a special appeal that calls to meditation. 
The furnishings are very simple: some paintings, two side altars, the Baptismal font, a 16th century pulpit, a marble balustrade ad a wooden Cross above the triumphal arch.

St. Peter's church stands out for a curious historical fact: in May 1797 the Valtellinese group of patriots gathered close to the church, guided by the Archbishop of Berbenno, Andrea Parravicini, with the aim to give birth to the liberation movement against the Grisons.
