Visconteo Castle
In Fagnano Olona a particular medieval castle
The Visconteo castle is a medieval fortification located between the centre of the municipiality of Fagnano Olona and the river Olona, in the province of Varese.
The architectural complex is in piazza Cavour and today houses the town hall.
Situated on an edge near the Olona river, the castle has always had an important defensive fuction since the time of the first nucleus, probably dating back to Roman times, as it is located in a valley that represents a natural connection route to Switzerland and the Milanese territory.
It is part of a series of fortifications that follow the course of the river, including, for exemple, those of Castelseprio and Castiglione Olona. The castle of Fagnano Olona is also considered to be the antemurale of Castelseprio and it is is mentioned in the struggles between the Torriani and Visconti families.
Like any self-respecting castle, it sees stories of entities roaming within its walls. Over the years, there have been several people who have 'felt' a presence at their side while inside the halls of the Castello Visconteo.
