Navigli milanesi and Darsena
Historical/cultural tour of the Navigli Milanesi
This itinerary gives visitors the chance to immerse themselves in old neighbourhoods that were traversed by the boats that supplied old Milan with various goods.
A few metres from the mooring you can admire the Vicolo dei Lavandai, one of the numerous washhouses where for centuries women washed the laundry of the Milanese by hand. Further ahead you get to the Alzaia Naviglio Grande 66 landing place, at Palazzo Galloni, home to the Centro dell’Incisione engraving centre.
This is followed by one of the most significant monumental complexes on the first stretch of the canal, made up of the church, bridge and washhouse of San Cristoforo.
Duchesses, kings and emperors would depart from the twin churches of San Cristoforo, a 14th century masterpiece, to get to Milan by water.
Having gone past the church, the boat will turn around and head towards the Vicolo dei Lavandai. Passing beneath the bridge known as the “Scodellino” after the old inns, you’ll come into the Darsena, once upon a time a port used for trading with Lake Maggiore thanks to the 1000 metres of docks equipped for the berthing of barges which made it one of the biggest inland ports in the Mediterranean.
After visiting the Darsena you will return to the embarkation point.
