Mantua and the flavours of tradition
Topping the rankings of financial newspapers and Legambiente for standards of living, safety, respect for the environment and leisure opportunities, Mantua (Mantova) is a destination that deserves a place of honour in the autumn weekend away calendar.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008, it is an oasis of elegance, quiet and calm, where every inch of the town is a work of art and the air is cleaner than anywhere else. Mantua is a compact provincial capital, easily navigable on foot, where you can take your time exploring streets that are brought to life by the numerous cultural events that fill the city’s cultural calendar throughout the year.
The city of the House of Gonzaga, the Palazzo Te, the poet Virgil and the world-renowned Festivaletteratura arts and literature festival, among its cultural gems Mantua can also boast one of the richest and most enjoyable culinary offerings anywhere in Italy, the result of a cuisine that has its roots in ancient traditions but which has been able innovate by refining its creations and skilfully making the most of all the blessings that Mother Nature has generously granted it.
The stars of what has rightly been called a true “culture of quality”, traditional Mantua products range from pumpkins to white truffles, from mouthwatering torta sbrisolona to the province’s charcuterie specialities, and from its historic mostarda to Parmigiano Reggiano from the Oltrepò Mantovano. This is to say nothing of the region’s high-quality wines, produced along all 300 km of the “Mantua Wines and Flavours Route” and best known for its extremely palatable Lambrusco.
Come with us on a food & wine journey through the traditional flavours of Mantua, where each stop is a delight for the palate and relief for the soul.
