From Varese to Sesto Calende
Varese is often called "the garden city" due to its position in the middle of a lush vegetation, but also because of the splendid Extended Gardens that comprise the heart of the city.
From the small gardens at the Municipality's arcades, head towards corso Matteotti, you will arrive to the splendid cathedral dedicated to San Vittore, the city's patron saint. After tasting a local dessert called amor polenta, do not miss the chance to visit the Sacro Monte, UNESCO heritage and pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages.
The downhill slope towards Capolago is quick and entertaining, by going along the eastern and southern shores of Lake Varese you will arrive right away to the lagoon of Comabbio, surrounded by wooded hills and rare plant life, including water lilies. Do not let the high number of ponds surprise you, Varese is known as "the sven lakes province" as well. You will find the Ticino river in Sesto Calende, at the exact same point where it springs from Lake Maggiore.
