From Casalmaggiore to Borgoforte
The name of Casalmaggiore seems to be derived from the latin term Castra Majora, meaning main camp, since it was a strategic locality during ancient Roman times. Nowadays its name is linked to the Children City project, with important initiatives to facilitate the mobility of children: amongst them a dedicated ringroad.
Take a small detour from Viadana and cross the Po towards Brescello, a city famous for being the backdrop of Giovannino Guareschi's Don Camillo novel series.
Borgoforte is a small town facing the left banks of the Po river. Its name derives from the presence of a military fort shaped like a helix, built by the Austrian in the mid 1800s. Go to the Borgoforte railway station for a quick visit to Mantua, just a few kilometers up north.
