The Row of Mulberry Trees at Prevalle
On the plain of the river Chiese that precedes the Valsabbia, lies the municipality of Prevalle. Curious is the positioning of the town hall, which is surrounded by agricultural areas and detached from the rest of the urban fabric of the town.
The imposing neoclassical building that houses it is known as the Palazzo Morani-Cantoni, built in the 18th century as a stately home. Of great aesthetic value is the double row of white mulberry trees (Morus alba) that, starting from the war memorial, shadows the pedestrian walkway leading to the entrance of the villa.
It is one of the best examples of mulberry rows in the region. The species was once widespread, as the leaves were indispensable as food for silkworms. A total of 38 aligned specimens can be admired in Prevalle, characterised by trunks that, on average, have a circumference of 3 metres (maximum diameter 110 cm) and a height of 12 metres. Together they form a truly remarkable plant architecture.
A green monument that is accessible to the public.
