Salò, located on the Brescian bank of Lake Garda, was the capital of the Magnifica Patria (Magnificent Homeland) during Venetian rule and home to several fascist government ministries of the Italian Social Republic.

Traces of the town's glorious past are clearly evident in its elegant historic centre, between Piazza Carmine, the "Fossa" district and the lakefront: a dense network of streets, alleys and squares with stately homes , buildings of great historical and artistic value, elegant shops and restaurants. The Saturday morning market is a highly popular weekly event.

The lakeside promenade of Salò that unwinds along the Gulf is the perfect place for enjoying a pleasant stroll between the lake, inviting shops, bars, ice cream shops and characteristic restaurants.

At the height of the wharf, be sure to look out for Palazzo della Magnifica Patria and Palazzo del Podestà, which attest to the city's noble history. Today, these two buildings house the municipal offices, with a lobby adorned with frescoes by Angelo Landi. Underneath the portico that connects the two buildings you can find ancient coats of arms and memorial plaques. The Cathedral is also situated on the lakefront, enriched over the centuries by important works of art.

In July, in the square in front of the Cathedral, classical music concerts are held during the "Estate Musicale" event.
