Ponte nel Cielo, Valtellina
A daring project launched in 2016 was the brainchild of a group of mountaineers
No trip to the Valtellina wilderness can be complete without experiencing the heart-pounding Ponte nel Cielo, or Sky Bridge, a high-altitude Tibetan bridge 140 metres high.
This daring project launched in 2016 was the brainchild of a group of mountaineers. Modelled on previous Austrian and Swiss builds, it was carried out by the Consorzio Pustarèsc with substantial manual and economic efforts as well as the firm resolve that this huge undertaking would ensure the Valtellina alpine valley would not be left to fend for itself.
The Tibetan Bridge links the two mountainsides of the Val Tartano (the village of Campo Tartano, 1,034 m above sea level, and Maggengo Frasnino, 1,038 m above sea level) and is accessible both by car, following the Main Road SP11 in Tartano, or by public transport heading from Morbegno to Campo Tartano.
Walking along the suspended larch wood planks, the hair-raising high altitude is offset by a scene of rare beauty. From this point, in a single look you can take in the Saddle between the Campo peaks, the glaciers, the Rhaetian Alps, the Colombera reservoir, the lush Orobica valley and the enchanting Maggengo Frasnino, not to mention the magnificent Valtellina valley floor opening, culminating in Lake Como.
A rush of endorphins that will grant you long-lasting mental and physical wellbeing.
