The Liriodendrons of Villa Melzi
In the spectacular setting of the Villa Melzi d'Eril Gardens, among large trees and botanical rarities, three Liriodendrons stand out.
Where the two lake branches meet lies Bellagio, the pearl of the lake. The charming village, loved by tourists from all over the world, is also famous for its neoclassical villas and their parks.
Of these, the Villa Melzi Gardens represent the most exciting treasure trove of botanical and landscape treasures. Walking through the paths of the well-kept and rich 19th-century park, one finds oneself immersed in romantic atmospheres among botanical rarities, immense trees, works of art, breathtaking views and corners with an oriental flavour. In the middle of the gentle grassy slope bordering the lake, three fantastic liriodendrons stand out with their height.
Also known as the tulip tree, this species, native to the east coasts of the United States, has had great success in European gardens as an ornamental tree. Well adapted to our climates, it has been in demand since the 19th century for its distinctive leaves and beautiful flowering, to which it owes its name.
Grouped and arranged in a triangle, the three large trees in the gardens, with a height of more than 25 m and trunks well over 4 m in circumference (the largest has a diameter of 150 cm), stand proudly giant, taking on a dominant landscape role.
It is really exciting to stand in their presence.
